Why Whitby
We understand how important and difficult it can be choosing the right school for your child. We encourage you to visit Whitby, meet the faculty and administration and talk with current students and their parents. We host numerous open houses, classroom visits as well as private tours that can be scheduled by contacting Nadia Meier, our Director of Enrollment at info@whitbyschool.org or 203-869-8464.
At Whitby, our goal is to guide students to develop a true passion for learning and gain the intellectual, emotional and social skills to "Learn, Live and Succeed" in today's global community. While our main goal is to provide a superior, well-rounded education (Learn), we also stress the importance of living that learning in everyday life and understanding the reward of community service (Live). The result is a student prepared to work hard, apply themselves and succeed at school and life (Succeed).
The following summarizes some of the many reasons we believe Whitby offers a superior educational experience:
- Over 50 years of the most innovative, educational best practices to prepare its students for high achievement. Founded in 1958, Whitby is America's oldest continuing Montessori school and a fully accredited International Baccalaureate World School. Whitby continually has sought out and implemented those educational practices that provide a superior education.
- Preparation for future academic success. From standardized testing to high school admissions acceptance, Whitby students have demonstrated exceptional performance in and out of the classroom. Whitby graduates exhibit an increased potential for leadership and have been admitted to the finest boarding, independent, and public high schools in the country.
"Students that stay through the 8th grade are the most well-adjusted, inquisitive, well-spoken, academically prepared individuals I have met. They go on to attend some of the best secondary and boarding schools in the country." Middle School Parent
- Outstanding, dedicated Faculty and experienced Administrators. A low 5:1 student ratio ensures tailored, individual attention. All teachers are fully trained and accredited - there are no teacher Aides or Assistants. In addition, Whitby's Special Assistance in Learning Program (SAIL) ensures each student achieves their unique potential.
- Diverse and International student body. Whitby is proud of our cultural, economic and intellectual diversity. 8th Graders make an annual trip overseas which provides them with an International perspective and embellishes their IB studies.
- World language and culture program - Spanish for all students with French or Chinese electives. Abundant Cultural Enrichment recognizing the school's dozens of distinct cultures and a student body that speaks over 15 languages.
- Extensive music, visual arts and drama - Music is integral part of the Whitby culture with music appreciation courses, Concert band, Chorus, Ensembles and individual instruction. Similarly, Theater & Dance integrated into cross-disciplinary programs with everyone participating in plays or a comprehensive Shakespeare program. Students master basic art skills and build on the foundation of art history with numerous opportunities to explore individualized interests.
- Vibrant Sports program - Interactive and participatory enhancing program promoting skill development and team building. Intramural and interscholastic team sports for Grades 3-8.
- Advanced technology - Supports the curriculum on every level, providing a context for research and study skills, and to encourage reading and independent learning. Overseen by an experienced Information Communication Technologies Coordinator, 91 computers are complemented by smart boards and extensive subscription-based databases.
- Warm and Involved Community - A community of enthusiastic families with an active Parents Association. The multi-aged classrooms and strong teacher-student relationships add to the sense of extended family that makes the school so inviting be it long-time local residents to relocating families.
- Excellent, modern facilities - located on 25 acres in beautiful Greenwich, Connecticut with numerous family activities and only 45 minutes from Manhattan.
- National, State accreditations and affiliations - Whitby School is the birthplace of the American Montessori Society, an International Baccalaureate World School, accredited by the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), Educational Records Bureau, the Parents League and the REACH Prep program.
