MSB Students Perform Merchant of Venice

Many thanks to members of the Whitby community who came out to support the Middle School's full length Shakespeare plays! The MS students enjoyed playing to a range of students, parents, alumni and friends. The MS Shakespeare plays raised $1266.85 to help with the cost of their trip to Italy! Helping Haiti

After the devastating Haitian earthquake, Whitby has become active in helping the thousands of orphans stranded on the streets of Port-au-Prince. Whitby recently held a clothing drive for Haiti and collected enough clothes to fill 2 small buses.  Whitby students have also written letters in French to children in Port-au-Prince through a charity organization to bring back hope to the poor children living in the wreckage of the city.

Beatrice Biira Assembly

Friday, November 13th, Whitby students were treated to an assembly with our special guest, Beatrice Biira.  Ms. Biira came to Whitby to share her wonderful story of growing up in Uganda.  Beatrice's story is one of hope, charity and everlasting change.  Beatrice grew up poor in Uganda then her family was given a goat from a chartiable organization.  The goat provided much needed milk for the family and there was even enough left over to sell which provided her family with a steady income which eventually helped Beatrice go to school.  As luck should have it the goat also was pregnant with twins!  Beatrice's story is about how the simple gift of a goat truly changed her and her family's lives forever.  Ms. Biira is a gifted speaker and held our children's attention captive as she shared her incredible story.  If you'd like to learn more about Beatrice Biira click here.  There is also a wonderful children's book about Beatrice's story called Beatrice's Goat by Page McBreir.  Ms. Biira has also been a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show as well as countless other local and national programs.

Whitby Wins All-American Soap Box Derby!

The Whitby car won it all at the Soap Box Derby race down Greenwich Avenue on Sunday, September 13th. The Whitby car, featuring cool graphics designed by UEB student Miranda Kaiser, and driven by Sam "Dare Devil" Delaney won the first prize  trophy defeating 40 other cars. Rooted on by a large group of Whitby supporters, Sam demonstrated gritty determination and nerves of steel overcoming stiff competition and car malfunctions. In head to head competition, Sam put  the pedal to the metal and twice beat last year's champion from Greenwich Country Day. The large Greenwich crowd cheered wildly when Sam accepted the trophy and Whitby was announced as the winning car.

Kudos to Sam and Miranda and everyone at Whitby who contributed to our success including Nadia Meier, Blake Glaeser, Lorraine Artale, Tom Coleman and all the supporters who came to the race. Look for the winning Whitby car to be on display at the school.

 Powering down the avenue

Mrs. Butterfield and team cheer on the car and Sam's victory!
