Supporting Whitby School

Thanks to the generosity of previous and current generations of Whitby families, we have celebrated over   50 years of educational successes, have built a beautiful campus and buildings, and have a strong and thriving community.  It is imperative that we continue to invest in the school and continue its wonderful legacy for future generations of Whitby students and their families,      as previous generations of Whitby families have done for us.

There are several ways to contribute to Whitby throughout the year.

The Annual Fund is a yearly fundraising effort to supplement Whitby’s annual operating budget. Our goal is 100% participation among Whitby families, faculty, and staff. Similar to other private schools, the Annual Fund contributions bridge the gap between the cost of tuition and the actual cost of educating each child. This 'gap' is calculated based on the current year budget, and the Development Office and parent volunteers work together to solicit the participation of all members of the Whitby community.  We ask that each family give, as a minimum, the calculated 'gap' amount for each child attending Whitby.  The total dollar amount raised is very important to pay for teacher training, technology, classroom materials, scholarships and other operating expenses.  However, the percentage of families participating is also very important. Families are asked to participate to the extent their means permit. When considering participation levels, every single gift is extremely valuable because each gift counts towards participation. We will track participation by class throughout the year, so please donate early in the year.

The Capital Campaign is a strategic fundraising effort used to request significant financial investments from Whitby school families usually to support campus capital infrastructure.  These special charitable contributions are above and beyond tuition, the Annual Fund, and Benefit.  The next capital campaign will secure resources for the construction of a new science lab, new classrooms and a new gymnasium. The most recent past campaigns raised funds for the renovation of the Children's House and the construction of Renaissance Hall (both of which have been completed).

The Annual Benefit is the largest social event and fundraiser of the year, is held in the spring and traditionally has included dinner, dancing, entertainment and auctions. It is organized by the Parents Association, and is attended my most families and almost all faculty and staff. Funds raised by this event support the operating budget.

The Whitby Angels Fund has been set up for families who want to make a significant donation in any school year. Donations to this fund provide Whitby with additional flexibility so that it can continue to enhance the curriculum and campus as needed. Whitby Angel donations are separate from Annual Fund and Capital Campaign giving, and require a minimum donation of $30,000. If you are interested in becoming a Whitby Angel, please contact the Development Office.

Whitby is very grateful for the generosity of all donors. If you or your spouse is associated with a company that matches charitable donations, please ensure you take advantage of the generosity of your company. The Development Office is available to assist with these requests.

If you have questions or wish to give securities, please contact Joan Lynch, Director of Development, at jlynch@whitbyschool.org, or 203-869-8464 x171.
