Stepping Stones

18 months to 3 years

The Stepping Stones program is designed to provide the very young child with an environment that is challenging, interesting, safe, and attractive. Following Montessori methodology, our toddler classrooms are carefully planned to meet the needs of young children by offering an ordered environment that fosters exploration, independence, freedom of choice, and movement. Sinks, toilets, shelves and windowsills are all built at a comfortable height for small children.

Social development is a major focus of Stepping Stones classrooms and is carefully supported. A child may choose to participate in group activities at his or her own pace, and in a manner and style that is his or her own. Each Stepping Stones classroom consists of children ages 18 months through 3 years. Each child is therefore able to engage with a diverse group of people, and has the opportunity to have many more experiences than the typical home environment offers.

Independence is nurtured from the very beginning. Children as young as 18 months are shown how to take out and put away their own work, wash their hands, and hang up their jackets. Teachers demonstarte confidence in the child’s abilities and offer them encouragement, warmth and support that empowers a child's self-confidence. Stepping Stones teachers are sensitive to the specific needs of very young children, including the challenges of separating from the parent. Teachers guide parents and children to ensure a healthy separation and positive interactions with other children and teachers. The five-day a week program provides the stability and consistency that help this holistic educational approach so successful.

The Stepping Stones program provides a strong base of understanding for the young child about community, respect for individuals, social interactions, and an early love of learning. These children are thus prepared to make the most of the Primary classroom and experience.
