Learning at Whitby

Founded in 1958 as America's first Montessori school, Whitby is a 50 year leader in education with a tradition of teaching students through the most innovative, proven practices in education. At Whitby, our goal is to guide students to develop a true passion for learning and gain the intellectual, emotional and social skills to "Learn, Live and Succeed" in today's global community. While our main goal is to provide a superior, well-rounded education (Learn), we also stress the importance of living that learning in everyday life and understanding the reward of community service (Live). The result is a student prepared to work hard, apply themselves and succeed at school and life (Succeed).

Whitby continues its tradition of applying best practices in education with the ongoing integration of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, one of the most highly respected educational programs in the world. Importantly, the IB program meshes extremely well with Montessori with both designed to meet the needs of the whole child - cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically - while setting high academic standards.

By promoting active inquiry and disciplined exploration, students are encouraged to use their minds well and develop a strong preparation for all future academic pursuits. Whitby's students benefit from an expert and dedicated faculty along with a low 5:1 student faculty ratio. This ensures that every student receives the tailored, individual attention that will stimulate creativity, excite the intellect, foster self-esteem and inspire a love of learning.

Extra-curricular Activities

Whitby’s educational program is designed to meet the needs of the whole child—cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically. Thus we are excited to continue to offer a full range of activities to complement the students’ academic school day.

Spring After School Activities

This spring we add three new exciting courses to the existing roster of courses:
Let's Go Hiking, Scratch: Fun and Easy Computer Programming and Golf School. All after school activities begin the week of April 5th and go through the last week in May.

Let’s Go Hiking!
Join Whitby’s Science teacher, Mr. Glaeser, and another Whitby teacher for three Saturdays on hiking excursions. This is a great opportunity to get outside and experience the panoramic scenes that make New England famous. We will hike local mountains potentially including Bear Mountain in northwest CT and others. Students will discover the secrets of rock-forming geology and local flora and fauna (why does moss usually grow on the north side of trees?).
For UE and MS students: Three Saturday dates will be announced shortly.  Fee: $200

Scratch: Fun and Easy Computer Programming!
Join Mr. Chein in the computer lab on Mondays and learn to create your own computer games, artwork, animations, and music using Scratch.  Scratch is a free programming language developed at MIT that's powerful, but easy to use.  Most importantly, Scratch is FUN!  Questions about the class? Contact jchein@whitbyschool.org  Curious about Scratch?  Check out http://info.scratch.mit.edu/About_Scratch.

ME Scratch:  Mondays 3:00 – 3:50, starting April 5th  $240
UE/MS Scratch: Mondays 3:45 - 4:30, starting April 5th $240
