World Languages
At
Whitby, we believe that the study and acquisition of world languages is an integral part of preparing students for global citizenship. After an introduction at the Primary 3 level with exposure to the Spanish, French, and Chinese languages,
Whitby students study Spanish and may also study French or Chinese from 1st grade through grade 8. In small, student-centered, multi-age classes, students build their oral, aural and written communication skills, and explore the cultures of countries in which the target languages are spoken.
Within the context of the language class, students learn about geography, history, art, music, traditions and literature. Oral communication is emphasized throughout the program and reading comprehension is introduced once an appropriate level of oral proficiency is reached. Our advanced students also read literature in the target languages.
Consistent with the International Baccalaureate approach, choosing a world language opens up the world to our students; it gives them a fresh cultural perspective and a new means of expression. The goal of the program is for students to acquire functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing and to develop a genuine interest in and appreciation for the language and the cultures in which it is spoken.
Many of our students are already bilingual when they arrive at Whitby. If their non-English language is one of those supported at our school, they receive advanced instruction with emphasis on writing and reading in that language. Additionally, they will choose to study a third language at Whitby.
