Experiential Term: Learning Beyond the Whitby Classroom

Written by Whitby School | 5/27/26 2:35 PM

Experiential Term offers Lower School students a dedicated four day opportunity to step beyond the structure of the traditional classroom and engage in learning that is immersive, intentional, and deeply engaging. Designed to spark curiosity and inspire independence, the experience encourages students to explore new interests, take meaningful risks, and approach learning with a renewed sense of confidence. It is a time where students are not only participants in their education, but active drivers of their own discovery.

At its core, the term reflects a commitment to experiential, student centered learning. By creating space for exploration and choice, students are empowered to follow their interests while building essential skills in problem solving, collaboration, and creative thinking. The result is a learning environment that feels both elevated and purposeful, where growth is not only encouraged but expected.

Creativity, Collaboration, and Expression

Throughout the week, students engaged in a diverse range of thoughtfully designed experiences that blended creativity with hands-on skill development. In Bakers and Makers, students stepped into the role of young chefs, designing their own aprons before working collaboratively to bake and decorate desserts. In Broadway Bots, imagination and technology came together as students coded robots to perform, transforming creative ideas into interactive storytelling. Others explored artistic traditions through Chinese papermaking and brush painting, moving from raw materials to refined, expressive pieces.

Experiential Term also provided opportunities for students to express themselves through movement, design, and digital storytelling. In Creative Choreographers, students collaborated to develop original dance routines, each contributing their own ideas to a shared performance. In Stop Motion Studio, they became directors, building characters and capturing stories frame by frame. These experiences fostered confidence, creativity, and a strong sense of ownership, allowing students to see their ideas come to life in tangible and meaningful ways.

Connection, Impact, and Real World Learning

A defining aspect of Experiential Term is its emphasis on connection and empathy. Through experiences such as Community Connection and Taking Action to Help Others, students extended their learning beyond campus and into the broader community. These moments encouraged students to listen actively, engage thoughtfully, and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. The focus was not simply on participation, but on meaningful interaction and reflection.

Hands-on exploration remained central throughout the week. Whether navigating outdoor environments in Wilderness 101, creating and constructing, or collaborating in the GREAT Whitby Race, students were consistently challenged to think critically and work together. Experiential Term brought together students across grades 1 through 4 in a shared experience that celebrated curiosity, creativity, and purposeful learning, reflecting the very best of learning by doing.
