Whitby Mission Statement

Whitby inspires a passion for learning and empowers each child to take responsibility as an open-minded, principled citizen in a global community.

Whitby Vision

Whitby will be the school of choice offering a compelling educational continuum, recognized for excellence and for embracing innovation.

Admissions - Guiding Principles

Whitby seeks families whose values align with Whitby’s mission and approaches to teaching and learning. Whitby strives to cultivate open-minded, principled, and globally-minded students who contribute to their school community, as well as the community at large.

Whitby’s learning community strives to be an inclusive learning community, a community where everyone feels their voice matters, where everyone feels seen and heard, and where everyone is treated with dignity and worth.  The Montessori and International Baccalaureate curriculum challenges us to recognize and value diversity, act with integrity and honesty, and show empathy, compassion, and respect for ourselves and others.

Students are expected to comply with the school's rules and procedures and to meet the school's academic and behavioral standards as a condition of continuation and re-enrollment.

The school offers rolling admissions. Whitby accepts applications throughout the year and rolling admissions officially opens in early March, in all grade levels dependent on the availability of space.

Whitby is committed to supporting a diverse community.  In keeping with this commitment, Whitby abides by applicable federal and state laws and does not discriminate in any of its policies or educational programs on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, ancestry, ethnicity, disability or any other category protected by law.

Admissions Process

Step Two: Schedule a Virtual Overview and/or Campus Tour

Step Three: Submit an Application for Admissions and if applicable submit an Application for Tuition Assistance

Step Four: Submit Records, Recommendations, and other Relevant Forms/Information

Step Five: Schedule Candidate Visit and Assessment

Whitby is able to provide a limited level of support for students with mild learning differences. We require that families inform us of any previously identified special needs or educational support at the time of application. In some cases, parents may be asked to commit to providing extra support for their child which may take the form of out-of-school provision.

Students with English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Whitby accepts applications from students at all levels of English language acquisition with the understanding that families are encouraged to maintain the child’s proficiency in the mother tongue.

For all applicants for whom English is not their only language, the students will be assessed to determine their English language proficiency, according to the application procedures. Students’ grade-level placements will be determined by the school through the admission process, based on whether Whitby can adequately prepare the student to be successful in the mainstream. In some cases, families may be asked to provide additional language acquisition support outside of school.

For applicants in Primary through Grade 2, the Admissions department will contact the EAL department to review the application and conduct an interview with the student and parents, whenever possible. The student will be placed with the appropriate level of English support, as needed.

Applicants in Grade 3 through Middle School will be assessed for their English proficiency level with the following assessments:

  • WIDA Assessment for English
  • A student interview
  • An on-demand writing prompt

Once an applicant’s English phase has been identified, the EAL department and Admissions will determine the appropriate placement for him/her.
