Whitby School hosted Acclaimed author Nedda Lewers, the author of the book "Daughters of the Lamp," for our students.
Ms. Lewers met with students in Grades 3–5 to share the inspiration behind her fantasy fiction novel Daughters of the Lamp, a synopsis of her book, and her writing process.

Following her presentation, Ms. Lewers led a hands-on writing workshop with Grade 3 students, guiding them through the process of crafting strong story leads, building rich characters and settings, incorporating cultural elements, and writing authentic dialogue. This experience supported their current fiction writing unit in Language Arts and their “Expressions Across the Nation” inquiry into culture across the United States.
Every single student in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grader received a personally autographed copy of "Daughters of the Lamp" to take home, in partnership with local Greenwich bookstore, Diane's Books.

The Transformative Power of an Author's Visit
When students have the opportunity to meet a real author, it transforms their perspective on writing and creativity.
-
Humanizing the Process: Students realize that authors aren’t magical geniuses; they are people who work hard, face challenges, and persevere.
-
Tangible Inspiration: Workshops and presentations like the one Ms. Lewers led give students a tangible connection to the writing world. They see that their unique ideas matter and that their stories are worth telling.
-
A Lasting Spark: An author visit acts as a powerful spark, reinforcing the idea that writing is a valuable journey. Every story begins with a small idea and a writer brave enough to chase it down.
