Our Middle School students traveled to William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia to participate in the 24th Annual William & Mary International Department Model United Nations (WMIDMUN) Conference. Hosted by undergraduate students, this distinguished, student-run conference has, for more than two decades, provided middle school students with an immersive and intellectually rigorous introduction to global diplomacy.
An Educational Model Rooted in Intellectual Exploration
WMIDMUN is intentionally designed to prioritize education over competition. The conference is not award-based, fostering an environment in which delegates feel empowered to take academic risks, engage authentically in debate, and refine their skills without the pressure of formal rankings. This philosophy aligns seamlessly with Whitby’s commitment to cultivating confident, thoughtful learners.
Representing Nations, Leaders, and Global Perspectives
Whitby sent 12 delegates who represented a diverse range of nations, historical figures, and fictional leaders across an array of committees. Students participated in respected international bodies including the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and The Alliance of Small Island States. Others engaged in dynamic crisis and special assembly committees inspired by pivotal historical moments and literary and cultural narratives. Each committee required delegates to analyze complex issues, negotiate diplomatically, draft resolutions, and respond strategically to unfolding developments.
Diplomacy in Action: Debate, Negotiation, and Collaboration
The structure of the conference combined formal debate with collaborative working sessions, providing students with meaningful opportunities to build alliances, refine policy proposals, and deliver persuasive speeches. Throughout the weekend, Whitby delegates demonstrated exceptional preparation, composure, and intellectual agility. They contributed substantively to discussion, articulated their positions with clarity, and embraced the responsibility of representing their assigned roles with both creativity and integrity.
Moments of Distinction Throughout the Conference
Among the many highlights were compelling opening statements, thoughtful coalition-building during working sessions, and confident responses to fast-paced crisis updates. Most notably, every delegate exhibited courage and resilience by stepping beyond their comfort zone to speak publicly and engage deeply with peers from other schools.
A Transformative Global Learning Experience
The experience was both challenging and transformative. Delegates returned with sharpened public speaking skills, an expanded understanding of global affairs, and a strengthened sense of civic responsibility. Whitby is proud of the leadership, maturity, and global-mindedness these students exemplified throughout the conference.
