Lower School
Grades 1-4
Grades 1 - 4 continue to practice the Montessori methodology. In addition, Whitby's integration of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program incorporates the following enhancements into our current programming:
Transdisciplinary Themes
Teaching teams, including classroom teachers and Specials teachers, organize curriculum units around six “Transdisciplinary Themes” across the year. These themes incorporate language, math, science, the arts and culture around a main idea. So, for example, rather than studying just the Pilgrims in the United States, the unit may include exploration on why people migrate, how colonies are formed and the socio-economic impact on the immigrants and the existing inhabitants.
Math and Reading
Concentrated Math and Reading instruction focus on developing skills and meeting the individual needs of our students. International texts will be increasingly used for novel study.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Study Skills
A leading edge ICT cirriculum enriches student learning. State of the art technology programs and applications ensure development of 21st century skills. The Test Preparatory and Study Skills program addresses the strategies and approaches that build student success.
World Language
As Spanish is adopted as the school’s secondary language, all LE and ME Students will participate in Spanish instruction. We aim to infuse Spanish into class meetings, physical education, and other areas when appropriate. Students may have the option to continue and/or begin a third language of study in Chinese or French.
Plus…these features of our curriculum continue:
- Science is overseen by a science coordinator who ensures rigorous scientific study and methodology throughout the cirriclum
- Art and Music classes are correlated with classroom work.
- Each class develops a Drama production.
- Regular class meetings and divisional assemblies foster community and faculty-student relationships.
- Enrichment and support is provided for students throughout the program.
- Sports programs provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a variety of athletic pursuits.
- Choral (LE/ME) and/or Band (ME) electives are offered.
- After School Activities provide learning extensions and tutorials for interested students.
